8 Things You Should Know About MonkeyPox


Research has shown that the monkeypox virus is deadly and can cause a fatal illness in humans and animal. 

Though, similar to human smallpox which has been defeated in Nigeria,  it is milder and report of death is minimal. Find below 8 things you should know about monkey pox :


1. First Discovered In Denmark 

The deadly monkeypox was first discovered in Denmark in 1958 and it made entry into the United States in 2003.

2. Carrier


It is transmittable by man-to-animal and vice versa. Notable carrier are crab eating macaque and African rodents. 


3. Nickname

Monkeypox is popularly known as MVP and it's a double-stranded DNA, zoonotic virus and a species of the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae. 


4. Virus Family

Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with monkeypox virus, that belongs to the same family of viruses that includes variola virus (the cause of smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.


5. Most Founded

It is mostly found in tropical rainforest of Central and West African regions . 


6. Symptoms


Symptoms include : fever, sweating, malaise,  cough, nausea, and shortness of breath. After 2-4 days  a rash with papules and pustules develops most often on the face and chest including mucus membranes inside the nose and mouth. 


7. Treatment

No specific medicine to treat the disease, but intensive supportive care helps patients to recover fully.

8. Prevention


Mode of prevention is to avoid contact with infected animals  especially those that are sick or found dead in areas where Monkeypox occurs.
